Current Appeals and those Still Seeking Support
Request
from Pastor John Brazeal, Christ the King Lutheran Church, ChicagoLCC has been contacted by Pastor Brazeal with an urgent need for assistance for two elderly members of Christ the King. One faces eviction and the other the loss of utilities.
Mr. Ingles (name changed) is a diabetic with a heart condition. He lives alone on the 4th floor of a walk up apartment building. His Social Security check does not cover his rent. To further complicate matters his checks have been delayed for the past 8 months. The church assists him with food and utilities but he needs $900.00 for back rent.
Mrs. Wills (name changed) also lives alone on a small fixed income. She was a teacher's aide and secretary for the Chicago Board of Education. She has been unable to pay all of her utilities and currently owes $1,000.00 in back payments to the gas company.
Christ the King has been supplementing and assisting both of these members but their resources are stretched thin and they need help. Please consider helping Christ the King as they continue to minister to these two elderly members with the Love and Compassion of Christ.

Update: Ethan - 12 Year Old Boy with Incurable Brain Tumor Needs Prayers and
Assistance
LCC received the following update from
Ethan's mother, Jennifer:
June 18, 2008
Ethan McGraw is 12 years old and has been battling brain cancer off an on since he was seven.
The past two years Ethan has been receiving chemotherapy that has kept tumors from growing. On Friday, June 6, Ethan had a temperature that sent him to the emergency room and he was treated for an infection. After a week of no fever reduction, an MRI was ordered an it was discovered that Ethan has an infection of his Ommaya reservoir ( a catheter placed in his head for chemo treatments), meningitis, and tumor growth. He is currently on antibiotics to get the infections under control. His Ommaya will be removed on Monday, June 23. We meet with the oncologist to discuss options about tumor growth. We understand that Ethan probably has about 6 months of life to enjoy.
We were astonished to hear that people from your organization are still thinking and praying for Ethan and are so thankful. Our family is struggling with financial hardship once again as Ethan needs more round the clock care.
We thank you in advance for donations, but most importantly, prayer support. May God continue to bless your organization.
Sincerely,
Jennifer McGraw.

I am writing about Ethan. Ethan is 12 years old. Ethan has an incurable brain tumor. He has had extensive surgery three times (1st in 2003; 2nd in November 2005 and 3rd this year), including a bone marrow transplant. He is now being treated with chemo therapy. No further procedures can be performed.
Ethan is a delightful young man who wins the friendship of all he meets. No one knows how much time we have left on this earth. Certainly Ethan doesn't know. He wants to live. He's full of life. He has faith.
Ethan and his family are members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. The good folks of Immanuel are helping Ethan's family. But, indeed, more is needed... Click here for the complete story

Jeremy,
2½ years old, was born with HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy) which is a
brain injury caused by a traumatic birth. Jeremy requires 24-hour care, as
he is not able to walk, talk, sit up or do anything other than move his arms
a little and look around. He is on a ventilator and has a tracheotomy so he
can breathe. As a result, mom had to leave her job to care for Jeremy, which
leaves dad the only one working and no insurance coverage. Recently, their
home was foreclosed because of the mounting medical bills and their home had
been flooded twice from the Keith Creek incidents here in town. They do now
have a small apartment, but are struggling to make ends meet.Jeremy was hospitalized in Rockford for a condition they would later learn to be problems with his liver and pancreas. The doctors tried to insert a PIC line into his leg and damaged an artery. This led them to transport him to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he is now. His parents are both with him there. Therefore, his dad is missing work and not earning any income. The Ronald McDonald house has graciously donated housing to his parents, but they do still need funds for their everyday needs. Click here to donate to Jeremy's fund...

Man
with Colon Cancer Needs AssistanceRequest from Pastor Benjamin Ball, St Paul Lutheran Church, Brookfield, Illinois
St. Paul is working with a family in need of financial assistance. The father has colon cancer that has now spread to his stomach and is no longer able to work. He has been totally disabled for the last two years. He has recently finished another round of radiation treatments. In order to care for him, his wife is only able to work part-time. They have an eighteen year old daughter still at home. His disability only provides $190.00 a week, they no longer have insurance. St. Paul has been helping with rent assistance but their needs are extensive and additional assistance is needed. Any assistance that can be provided for this family will be a great blessing and deeply appreciated.

"I want to experience poverty. I want to go to a place that most other human beings do not want to go. The reason I choose Africa is embodied in the responses of many that say '.... why of all places would you choose to go to Africa?' Africa is a place where people will not see me as one of the ignorant young masses of the world, but a person who has the potential to change their lives."

Request from Pastor Jean Durán - Living Lord Lutheran Church, Bartlett, IL
Zuleica has end-stage renal disease caused by a rare disease and she must have a kidney transplant to live. Unfortunately, she does not have insurance. However, members of Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett and Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, along with friends from the community, have teamed up to raise the $150,000, plus money for post-operative medicines, required to have the surgery. After more than two years of fundraising activities, more than $150,000 has been raised and the transplant surgery may happen this spring.
Efforts are now focused on securing enough money for Zuleica's post-op
medications. Anyone interested in getting involved in this great cause can visit
www.livinglordlutheran.org and

Duran, at Living Lord, at (630) 830-3630, ext. 4602.

Thank you for your support to those in Haiti during this time of great distress

Children
Starving in HaitiLCC received the following e-mail from Susan Gross, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park:
The Government has imposed some new laws that are causing a back up at the docks in Haiti. Because of the drug traffic that has been going through Haiti for the last several years inspections are now being enforced but there are not enough people to do this work so ships are sitting at the docks waiting to be inspected while their cargo (much of which is food) has rotted. Now there is a tremendous food shortage and food prices have increased 400%. Of course this is the simplified version of the problem but you get the idea.
Our immediate concern of course is to feed Pastor Isaac's family, the orphans and as many of his congregation as possible. Pastor Isaac did tell me a few weeks ago that his wife was trying to buy food on credit for the children and is having a difficult time. People are actually eating dirt mixed with vegetable oil and salt to relieve their hunger pains. Of course this meal has no nutritional value and eventually makes them sick because there are a variety of parasites living in that dirt.
Food is available but the prices are so high that those who make anywhere from $0.10 to 1.00 a day cannot afford to eat. Those of us that are traveling to Haiti in a couple of months plan to pack our bags with granola bars, dehydrated soups and powdered energy drinks instead of the supplies we were planning to take but until then we are asking for cash donations that we can wire directly to Pastor Isaac to keep the children fed.
Click here to donate to Isaac's Orphanage, Haiti.
Dollar per Dollar your donations will be sent to Pastor Isaac to buy food during this crisis.

On the evening of March 18th, a fire occurred at a housing facility for New Moms Inc., a Christian faith based shelter for homeless teenaged mothers. They are in the process of rebuilding. Dianna Bonfield of Lutheran Church Charities contacted them on Monday, May 5 to get an updated list of their needs.
