As
part of the medical mission team sponsored by St. Matthew Lutheran Church,
Barrington, Jeanne Gates (right) screens patients for hypertension and
diabetes at the clinic in Polo Gamboa, Mexico
By the end of the week, the team had helped 664 people. While medical care is available in this area, most of the people coming to the clinics cannot afford that care.
The team's main clinic and pharmacy were located at Santisima Trinidad, the Lutheran church in Zaragosa. Clinics also operated at three remote sites--San Francisco, San Marcos, and Polo Gamboa--where people allowed the team to use their homes and yards for the clinics.
Polo Gamboa is the poorest of these communities. The area has no sewers or safe water supply. Because of these conditions, diarrhea and intestinal parasites are common medical complaints.
Providing clinics at these three remote sites also demands a great deal of flexibility and creativity from the medical team. Tarps, bed sheets, wire, and duct tape are all employed to transform yards and homes into clinics.
Not all the medical team members come from St. Matthew Congregation.
This year four members came from St. Peter Lutheran Church, Arlington Heights,
two joined the team through Lutheran Church Charities in Addison, and five came
from other parts of the United States. They became team members through
Lutherans in Medical Missions, a mission agency in St. Louis which helps to
connect medical personnel with groups sponsoring medical mission trips.
Because most members of the medical team could not speak Spanish, St. Matthew
entered into a unique partnership with San Pablo, the Spanish-speaking Lutheran
church in Aurora. The pastor of that congregation, the Rev. Alex Merlo, and
three members of his congregation, joined the team and worked as
translators.
"One of the blessings of working in this area year after year," stated the
Rev. Gerald Schalk, medical team leader and pastor at St.Matthew, "is that we
have come to know the people and their needs. The trusting relationship which
has developed between our teams and the people we serve has helped to increase
our effectiveness."
If you are interested in joining an upcoming mission team contact
the Rev. Gerald Schalk, 847-382-7002.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Barrington IL Sending off Medical Team

Help Fill the Bus!
Update and Request from the Friends of Haiti, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park, Illinois
Three years ago the Sunday School at Christ Lutheran Church in Orland Park received a request from Pastor Isaac of Jeremie, Haiti for a school bus. The funds have been raised and the bus is now at Christ Lutheran Church. Pastor Isaac has taken 19 orphaned children into his home. Many of these children lost their parents to starvation or diseases that are common in Haiti. Orphaned (or abandoned) children in Haiti are often sold into slavery or prostitution. With the Lord's help, Christ Lutheran plans to build an orphanage for Pastor so that he can continue to save more children from this life of misery. This is where the bus comes in.
The bus will be sent to Haiti in October for Pastor Isaac's use but before it goes it will be used as a shipping container. Many of the building supplies they will need for next summer will be packed along with other items that Pastor said the people in his community could really use.
They would like to involve as many in this project as possible. The need in Haiti is endless
Items needed are as follows:
Over the counter For the orphanage:
Vitamins Plastic dinnerware & utensils
Aspirin Plastic tumblers

Tylenol socks

Help With The Hoop
Request from Pastor Walt Schoenfulhs, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Norwood Park
Dear friends,
St. Paul, in conjunction with MOST Ministries, will be hosting a short-term mission team to Battambang, Cambodia where we will distribute eyeglasses, build a basketball court for the local Lutheran church and conduct a basketball clinic. Through this effort the prayer is that the local congregation can reach out to the youth of the community as well as provide much needed eye wear - all for the sake of the Gospel.
I'm writing this to ask for help in raising funds. We still need to raise over $2,000.00 for construction costs. We're trying to alleviate the team members from having to add these costs into their own costs.
Cambodia is less than 2% Christian. The local believers are seeking ways to open doors into their communities so that opportunities to witness might also occur. Your help and support in this will help greatly!
In Christ, Pastor Walt Schoenfuhs

January 22, 2007 Update from Pastor John Reinke:
January 18 - Betty Jo Lucero writes...
Reaching out to the deaf in Ghana
In January five of our fellow Lutherans will join Rev. John Reinke, director of Concordia Seminary's Deaf Institute as he travels to Ghana. Rev. Reinke commented
"We
go to Ghana to "Reach
the Deaf" and to teach
God's word to the Deaf.
They are "hungry" to know about God. We
teach them so they, in
turn, can be well-versed to go and teach the
Gospel to other deaf
Ghanaians."The team will be leaving for Ghana on January 9th and returning January 31st.
Deaf volunteers: pictured left to right
Rev. John Rienke, Karen Hale, Betty Jo Lucero, Linda Zoiss
The goal is for each team member to raise at least $5000 for air fare, shots, visas, passports, and for Christian resource materials to leave with the Deaf Ghanaians.
Their first request is for prayer to continue to make these mission trips. Please pray for God to strengthen the Deaf leaders and give them his wisdom. Pray for the deaf in Ghana.

Rev. Otten Returns from Ghana
Consider Helping with Immediate Need!

Pastor Walter and Ruth Otten have returned from their teaching trip to Ghana. While teaching the catechism to the students at Accra Seminary, Pastor Otten became aware of a pressing need. A seminary student, Matthew, painfully and regretfully revealed how much time had to be spent by pastors in Ghana to provide for the material needs of their own families. When they finish their training and begin their work they will not receive a salary as pastors. They have to provide for their families in the spirit of St. Paul, as "tent makers." Little time is left for the work of the ministry. "We are here," Matthew said, "to prepare to become pastors, to proclaim the Gospel to the lost." Could his "professor" help? The last words of Matthew in the dialog, as he spoke for the entire class, were, "We are not asking for a fish, just teach us to fish." What Matthew was seeking was financial aid in securing something as simple as a mill, which he and others in his village could use to earn money to support their families. Then they could spend more time serving as pastors.
Pastor Otten promised to do what he could to support the pastors of Ghana in their "tent maker ministry." Pastor Otten told the President of the Lutheran Church of Ghana, Dr. Paul Fynn, that he has set a goal to raise $25,000 for the "Tent Maker Ministry." Through the office of the President of the Lutheran Church of Ghana gifts will be made available for the pastors of the church so that they can earn money through "tent making" enabling them to more efficiently provide for their families and thereby devote more time to their call to serve the Good Shepherd. $8000.00 has already been raised for this effort.
Those wishing to support this effort are invited to send their gifts to Lutheran Church Charities. The Lutheran Heritage Foundation will match all gifts and use the matching funds to publish a translation of the catechism into the major tribal language of Ghana. English is the official language of Ghana but few in the villages of Ghana, where most of our Lutheran churches are, speak English. Because of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation's generous offer to match your contributions, your support will not only provide the pastors with a means to support their families but will also give them the important tool of catechisms as they minister in their villages.
